Chapter 22

The Flower Festival

Guada and Concha adorned her hair with fresh flowers and pink lace. Her curls were tucked in a middle-high bun. Her neck festooned with a diamond necklace. Clarissa almost did not recognize herself in the mirror.

“You look very beautiful, dear,” said her mother as she fixed her sleeves.

“She almost looks like the younger you, Guada,” said Tiya Consuelo.

There was a knock on the door, and Maying appeared.

“Don Jaime is waiting in the carriage, Doña Guada,” Maying said shyly.

“We better do our last minute touches, dear sister,” mumbled Consuelo as she looked at herself in the mirror.

“Maying, help Clarissa with her train. The dress is a little heavy,” said Guada before she and her sister left the room.

Clarissa laughed.

“What’s funny, señorita?”

“Mama and Tiya are more self-conscious than me. They have been changing outfits since early afternoon.”

“Four times?”

“No. Five times!”

Both girls ended up laughing. Clarissa pointed out how messy her Tiya Concha’s make up had become after the grueling task of transforming her into a lady for tonight.

“Who’s going to be your escort, señorita?” Maying picked up the long, heavy white train of Clarissa’s gown.

“Doña Stella’s son, Antonio. Oh, how I hope it rains tonight.”

“It won’t rain. The stars, and even the moon, are so bright tonight.”

“Hush, Maying! Whose side are you on?”

“You must really detest the parade, señorita.”

“I hate the idea of being displayed like a tapestry. You of all people must know that. I am not a doll to be beautified as they wish.”

Maying faced her and said resolutely, “Señorita, it’s just for one night. I’ll be accompanying you, anyway.”

“Oh, Maying! This must be the worst day of my life!”

“It’s not as bad as yesterday.”

“Please don’t remind me of that letter from Barcelona.”

“What was on that letter again?” Maying sounded as though she was going to burst into laughter.

The door opened and revealed Doña Guada in her most fabulous outfit. But behind the regality she was bearing was the uncouthness of her mouth. She started reprimanding the girls for being so slow.
